Do you see your culture as a liability or an asset when it comes to climbing the corporate ladder?
It takes courage to embrace your cultural identity, especially in workplaces where you can't see people in leadership who look like you.
I only recently started to say my full name out loud in meetings for fear of the immediate biases it would trigger...
But when I stepped into my true self and embraced that this was part of who I was bringing to the table, I felt so liberated, and it reflected in my confidence and the perception others had of me.
And even though I had to deal with the biases of being black, wearing my God-given hair or speaking English in my African accent, I found people who wanted to support black women like me at work.
In this episode you will learn about:
- The consequences of not being authentic at work
- The importance of owning your cultural identity and educating others about
- The role your cultural identity plays in the personal brand and allies you can create
- What to do when someone labels you as the token diversity hire
